The starting point for my research began with land. Under much scrutiny, lots of crits and lots of thinking it became clear that this project was more than about land — it was about what it represented and the knowledge that it held. This notion is rooted in my last name, Brzozowski. It’s a topographic last name meaning Birch and references the abundance of Birch trees that grew in the area of Poland where the name derives from.
The idea of a Birch tree representing a name, my name, and ultimately part of my heritage and history, is what first compelled me to research heritage, value and identity. More than that, it is what steered my research into how we interact with heritage beyond traditional formats or what is imposed on us as ‘our heritage’ by other bodies.
