Assigned Identities

The tendency of characterizing others only in the light of a particular community or an assigned identity, works as a means for differentiation and consequently an alibi for exclusion. Poetry – in the sense of revealing an aspect of who we are to the world – could become a mechanism for positioning ourselves socially and be heard for what we are and for what we want to be representing.

“The prints don’t so much illustrate the poems, as convey the eroticism underlying them; they make plain what Cavafy was forced to disguise.”
— D. Hockney
